A lot of enhancements have been implemented following my last review and very impressive ones too. I particularly like the way the app handles SMS delivered on a dual SIM device where a reply will be sent through the SIM it was received on. One thing I would like added is the ability to change the theme. It would be cool to have an adaptive theme. An effect, built-in, something similar to that of the LG G6 keyboard. Otherwise this is still a great app with highly appreciated improvements. Full Review

It is MUCH better now. It may be that I have a Pixel 2 now, but still. Almost all of the bugs have been resolved or happen much less. It could use improvements to make it more customizable and feature filled like the other messaging apps. Group messages still needs improvement and the timestamp for messages needs to be when sent rather than when received, or maybe both. But overall it is very good. The minimalist feel is nice and with a few more tweaks it would be great! Full Review

This app seems to have gotten better. I used it on my Galaxy SU because I enjoy everything Google, so I wanted it over the default app. Then it started to not function properly and I started missing peoples' messages. They just weren't coming through unless I reboot my phone, even though other apps worked just fine. Now I have the OnePlus5T and the default app works just fine but, it doesn't allow me to add Bitmoji or gifs. Just the stock emojis and photos. Weird. Anyhow, I installed this app once again to give it a 3rd chance and it has been working just fine... For now. Nice app so far. Full Review

These issues still exist: It'd be great if I could distinguish between read & unread messages. Unread threads should be bold or have some indicator. And I can't receive MMS when my phone's data is disabled but I'm connected to Wi-Fi. That still needs to be sorted out. Full Review

I think it's a good app, very good at sending and receiving regular SMS messages. It won't allow me to send or receive MMS messages. If someone wants to send me a pic I have to redirect them to WhatsApp. Also, sometimes I'd like to email a text conversation to myself so I can save it but it doesn't allow you to. Fix that please. I've rated before but I'm gonna do it again this year. Please bring the ability to share any contact easily without having to go to the contacts app. I'll give you 5 stars once this is done 2017. Another year has gone by and we cannot send a contact from messages to another person 2018. Full Review

I tried the app and at first it was worth 5 Stars. Now I realize the numerous messages are coming, I'm notified, but no messages are present in the app. When I open up the stock, which is not the default app FYI this one was, those messages are present there. So how is it that the messages are in a non-default app for messages but not in this app which I had as the default. Lost valuable information due to this issue. Now I can't choose my own default sound from my library. I can only choose tones built-in to the phone? Why give the option if it doesn't work. If I choose my own, reverts to silent. Full Review

Simple, reliable, and customizable to an event, this messenger never fails me. I like the attachment options and the custom little gifs. My only real gripe is that once you open the app and scroll through the conversations, the notifications go away. It'd be preferable to only have the notifications disappear if you opened the actual conversation. In addition, I'd love to see dark themes and the option to add your own background. Full Review

Was fine until the update. Now messages disappear. This is the number one reason I take all apps off auto update. The only reason this app is updated is because I had to factory reset my phone. Other wise, I would still have the older unbroken version which is fine for me. Prime example of someone over thinking and trying to do too much. Full Review

To the Google team: this is a good, solid app that could use a few improvements. Please look at the Verizon Messages+ app, especially the pop-up notification window that appears on the lock screen. I had to install the SMS Pop-up app to re-gain this functionality when I switched to Pixel. Please build this functionality into the Google Messages app. Full Review

It works as a texting app but it is pretty generic. It would be great if it had a night mode or at least change the background from white to black. Update 1/16/17: There is no native feature to delete older messages. Like only keep the last 1000 messages in a conversation. Over time a single conversation slows down the whole entire app. To the point where I would type a message hit send and it would take 45 seconds to send. Full Review

It seems to work really well. The only issue I have had is sending longer messages to iPhones. I think it is just the communication between Android and iOS - not perfect, but I can live with it. Oh and I love the different colors for each contact! Full Review

A clear problem with this app is the removal of the notification indicator on the app icon. Once you have gone into the messages app, then exit without reading the "unread" message, the notification indicator goes away (even though their is still an unread message). This is a problem for people like myself that forget they have a message to reply to. I hope they fix this small issue! Full Review

Google Team this needs to be fixed, messages takes a 900KB jpeg and further shrinks it to 84KB Why? MMS service size limit is 1MB. The quality decrease is limiting the usefulness of Android messages. Old versions pre-Jul2017 used to work fine. Also "Status: 128" appears in all MMS details used to be error code 128 what does this mean? Full Review

I think it's solid for it being stock. I wish they'd make it so I can move the stupid emoji button somewhere else or just remove it. Right next to the spacebar gets annoying sometimes when my large fingers try to type fast. Overall another great Google product. Full Review

When I first switched to Android from iPhone I used the stock messages app and I loved it. However I quickly became irritated with the lack of customizability and their method for finding media files in a conversation. I would like the option to engage some type of night mode or monochromatic darker color scheme rather than having to change the color of every individual conversation. In addition I miss the way the iPhone was able to display all of the pictures in the conversation in one screen. The closest app to that that I have found for Android is Textra Full Review

For a native Android application for messaging the features are very limited. My carrier provides an enhanced application of its own that is significantly better. Things such as automatic identification of a street address so that it hyperlinks to your driving app, or the ability to select just some text not the entire text message and recognition of phone numbers are all missing from this application. I've read the help and product information sheets and checked out Google's guidelines on the internet this really doesn't have any significant capabilities. Full Review

I love the simplicity of Google's implementation but unfortunately there is one major flaw. Images sent in app are garbage quality. My boss sends an image of a memo to me and my coworker. She can read it fine while it is a blurry illegible mess for me. This is a major feature for a messaging app today and its disappointing that google has such a poor implementation that they still have not fixed after many years. Full Review

This app has been great until recent Android update on my Pixel XL. When app is initially opened it will reset then close, I will have to open again for it to work. Second, I will open a conversation after the app has loaded, begin to type my message, even use the word prediction and nothing will show in the conversation. In turn I have to retype the same thing over again. Third, I am no longer able to open a conversation from the notification bubble on my home screen. As I stated above the issues I have been having did not occur until the recent Android update before that the app was flawless. Full Review

Google Pixel. This app constantly freezes in the middle of typing, attaching images, and anything involving group messages. It's actually pretty new behavior (since the Pixel 2 came out, but I'm sure that's just a coincidence because Google would NEVER employ planned obsolescence, right?), and it's preventing me from having reasonable text conversations. What year is it again? Google, get rid of your 1000 different messaging apps and make a single one that works. Everyone else, avoid this messaging service and avoid the Pixel. Full Review

This is your basic/simplistic messaging app. It does everything a messaging app should do. However it is lacking an "auto-delete" option. It would be nice to have a toggle in the settings to give users the option to have messages that are X-days old to be automatically deleted (30-days would be a great option). Other than that missing option, it's been perfect for me. Hopefully we'll get it in a future update! Full Review

I love I can send gifs and YouTube links that include pic links. It is more complicated to add recipients to a message, and impossible as far as I can determine if you are sharing a link that is already in the texting box, ready to send. If I try to add another recipient, it creates a new message without the link. So I have to go back and share the link a second time, to the 2nd recipient. Much more time consuming, especially if I'm trying to share with multiple recipients. Full Review

Solid, but something could make a huge improvement to messaging on Android in general. Messaging services that allow people to receive messages from Allo and now calls from Duo without having the app setup should be integrated into Android messages so that those without Allo or in the future other apps can keep a log of the messages they receive from those apps and respond at their leisure and even keep open conversations. This would in large solve the lack of sms in Allo by allowing users to message non users easily Full Review
